Description
Goudi is a hidden gem within Cyprus, a tranquil village in the Chrysochous valley, in the region of Paphos and nestled on the banks of the River Tzelepis. The population is only about 150, so this really is a very sleepy village and that’s what attracts visitors who are looking for the slower pace of traditional village life. However, Goudi holidays are also perfectly positioned as the gateway for exploring the abundant nature and wildlife of the surrounding area. You’re only 31 kilometres from Paphos and six kilometres from Polis so there’s plenty to explore beyond the village of Goudi if you’d like to set a faster pace. The Troodos Mountains are close by for hiking, cycling and horse riding and so too is the Ammati Forest. Pack a picnic and take pleasure in the stunning natural scenery, scents and sounds, while taking plenty more pictures for the photo album.
Lush vineyards, trees laden with citrus fruit and almond and olive groves can be seen in the area. Be sure to sample some of the local olive oil from the modern olive press in the village which serves the locals and the olive producers in the nearby villages. From the top of the village you’ll glimpse the sea at Polis and the views across the Chrysochous Valley and villages south of Paphos Forest are amazing. Be sure to visit the village church, hike the area’s most scenic trails: Aphrodite, Adonis and Avakas Gorge or follow one of the wine routes. Nearby, the Evretou Dam is great for fishing and Tsada Golf course is only a short drive away too, so you will find plenty to keep you occupied.
Local legend has it that the village was named after the first settler, who may or may not have been called Goudis! However, it may also have originated from the word 'Voutima' (dip in water). Why not ask one of the locals while sharing a brew in one of the two coffee shops (kafenios)? Or just sit back under the vines and watch the world and the odd donkey saunter by. While the sun is out, head to the rural town of Polis and the peaceful resort of Latchi, only a few minutes’ drive away. After a morning on the beach, sample some freshly caught fish in Latchi, in the beautiful place where Aphrodite first fell in love with Adonis.
Whatever you choose to do, you’re sure to find your inner calm and enjoy a restoratively peaceful holiday on your holiday to Goudi.
