Dubrovnik

Explore ‘The City' or 'Grad' as the locals call it, in Dubrovnik City. The rich historical heritage and culture of the old city can be seen through its well-preserved buildings, with streets and squares dating back to Renaissance and Baroque periods. The term “Grad” refers only to the Old Town Dubrovnik and its name comes from a time when Dubrovnik was the key trading port on the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Today people come here for more leisurely pursuits and to enjoy Dubrovnik’s enviable location on the calm blue Adriatic waters. This magnificent walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an upmarket destination and visitors love the pedestrianised old town with its elegant Baroque churches and medieval fortifications.  Head to The Stradun, which is the main shopping area, where locals and holidaymakers alike gather to enjoy the many informal restaurants and wonderful seafood restaurants that can be found there. A favourite amongst celebrities, the Old Town has also been featured in Game of Thrones and Star Wars: Episode VIII.

The best way to explore the Old City is on foot, as it occupies a small area. Meander through the maze of romantic lanes with their stone wall and listen to the chatter of locals on the busy little streets. This historical city is surrounded by medieval ramparts, with many city entrances below the forts. The main city entrance is Pile City Gate, with two beautiful forts; Minčeta from the north and Bokar from the south. Bokar Fort was originally designed as a sea defence but today it is the venue for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Dubrovnik is a sleepy destination during the winter months, but in the summer months, the old town comes to life in a variety of great venues. Be sure to try out some of the great bars and nightclubs in Dubrovnik, with everything from Jazz to waterside parties available.

Informal Buza is a favourite and it’s easy to see why as you enter through a tiny door in the seaward-facing city walls. You’ll be greeted with sublime views of sea and sky, with tables set out on different levels on the rocks. Drinks are served in plastic cups and at night Buza is lit by candles, making it a truly romantic place for a drink.

Cave Bar More is another must-see place. Set in a natural cave, with rock formations and subtle lighting, this bar can be found in the basement of Hotel More. Grab an outside table by the water’s edge, looking out over Lapad Bay.
